______________________________________ NFL Cities by Train (Coming Soon) Now that the professional football season is here again we thought it would be fun to check out the cities with National Football League franchises to see how we'd get to a game by train if the inclination sets in this season. Our new special guide to NFL citiies is not quite ready so we'll publish our findings sometime in September via a special newsletter report. It turns out that all but one NFL city (Green Bay) is accessible via a nearby metropolitan area train station. The closest stop to Green Bay is Milwaukee via the Empire Builder or Hiawatha. Our special guide will show you where these stations are located and a map between the station and the stadium. Of course you will need to stay overnight in most citiies which may be what you would do anyway if you traveled into town by some other means. ______________________________________ 2009 Amtrak Route Guides (Updated 12-11-09 with new Amtrak pdf links) If you've glanced at Amtrak's Route Guides lately you may have noticed that some of them have changed a bit. Amtrak's excellent guides are available at most of their station stops. They have been around for awhile, but the downloadable versions have been difficult to print in a readable print size without doing some manipulation of the downloaded file. The new downloadable pdf files are easily readable when printed from your home computer on standard 8 1/2 x 11 size paper. Here are the links to the 2009 reformatted guides that we've discovered so far...
We've updated the applicable pages of the Rail Passenger USA Route Guides with links to these new 2009 Amtrak guides. ______________________________________ California Zephyr - Wyoming Detour Update The track work between Denver and Salt Lake City via Amtrak's normal California Zephyr route is still in progress. Ray decided to take a ride from Denver to Reno in August (via Wyoming) to re-verify the detour maps we published in July. We've made a couple of minor tweaks to the Denver and Salt Lake City station area maps to better show the detour route into and out of these stations.According to the flyer that Ray picked up in Denver Union Station on August 20 (Amtrak's 2,000,000 point promotion date), the train will make the Wyoming detour between September 1 and September 9, 2009 and between September 16 and September 24, 2009. MAKE SURE TO CALL AMTRAK if you are traveling on Trains 5 and 6 in September! Ray ran into many domestic and international traveler's on his trip that were expecting a ride along the Colorado River and ended up with a ride through the Great Divide Basin instead. The train made a couple of notable stops in Wyoming; The first was just west of Cheyenne, near Pearce, to board UP personnel qualified to operate the train through the detour in Wyoming; the second was in Green River announced as a crew change point. Whether or not they'll let us smokers off the train in Green River is dependent on the call of the UP yardmaster there. If you're lucky enough to get " Track One", you may get a smoke break there at the discretion of the conductor; if not we'll see you in Salt Lake City if you're awake. By the way the travel time on the detour is about 3 hours faster than the published route through Colorado. ______________________________________ Website News at Rail Passenger USA Canadian Train Route Maps Rail Passenger USA's Canadian passenger route guides are now under construction. Since it took our first two years of operation to complete Amtrak's USA long distance routes, we decided to take a different approach to completing the Canadian route guides. Now you'll be able to follow our progress. The approach will be to issue the station area and station to station maps first for all of the guides and then followup with the local information (photos, transportation links, etc.). So far we've completed the maps for the Montreal to Halifax train, the "Ocean". Click here to view our Ocean Route Guide home page for example.Illini and Saluki Route Guides Added Route Guides for USA Regional Routes, the Illini and Saluki Routes may now be viewed on the Rail Passenger USA website.Free Route Guide Downloads Still Available!
